When I first went to Farmerville as the head football and baseball coach, a man promised Donna and me a half a beef. In many rural communities, the tax base is not very large so the teacher's salaries are not that good. Many times people try to make up for the low salary by giving the coach and his family gifts, or in this case, a good-size amount of beef.
This excited Donna and me because we knew how much this would help us on our grocery bill. The only meat that had showed up was four nice mallards that were left on the door steps. I found out later that a football player's father had dropped them off.
Later on in the spring, we had played our way into the State AA baseball tournament that was held at Nicholls State in Thibodaux. My wife was riding down to the tournament with a school board member and his wife.
During the trip, and I don't know how this conversation got started, but my wife shared with them that some man had promised us a half a cow at the first of the year and we had not seen it yet. Donna had no idea who had promised us that beef, but it just happened to be the man who was driving the car. The week after the tournament, we had a half a beef in our freezer.
